Safe Place (2022)

After several years hiatus, I took part in Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin on QLD’s Gold Coast. I returned to my interest in simple designs influenced by industrial materials such as safety ribbon. It was also a pleasant reference to my first Safety Space in Melbourne back in 2014. The slight variation in the title this time round is an oblique reference to so-called safe places for various marginalized groups in the community. My Safe Place is at the center of a spiral. Start your journey on the outside of the ribbon until you reach the middle. Of course it is hardly a set of instructions on how to interact with the work but ultimately many a viewer did take the journey: especially children. I even saw a jogger on their evening run trace the entire length in and outward again. If you make a path, they will follow.
